La Ferme de L'arc-en-ciel is a fully French registered* 50 acre (18 Acres rented) Clydesdale horse and llama breeding farm situated amidst the beautiful rolling hills of the Bourbonnais region of the Allier, Auvergne, France.  The farm has focused on two main specialist activities.  The breeding of quality Clydesdale Horses and Llamas

* Please note that in France unless a horse or llama breeder has a Siret Number they are operating a business and selling horses or llamas illegally.

Clydesdale horses (mainly stallions and geldings) first made an appearance in France in significant numbers during 1914 - 1915 (WWI) when due to a sever shortage of steam driven tractors suitable for hauling medium artillery pieces, Clydesdales were brought in to tow these batteries and also ferry supplies to the front lines in appalling conditions.  Clydesdales were used by a number of armies during WWI including the British, Australian and Canadians.

Although there are a growing number of Clydesdale horse owners in France ( we believe there to be at least 42 Clydesdale horses in France) this magnificent breed is now a rare sight here in a country where the Percheron rules.  The Clydesdale does however remain a popular horse breed in Europe and further a field in Russia, America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Austria and Italy.  It is a testament to the popularity of the breed that we get many enquiries from Germany, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Greece and Romania and we have even had one from as far away as China.  The Clydesdale has recently been re-categorised by the rare breeds survival trust as a "Vulnerable" breed and we are totally committed to playing our small part towards its future survival and ensuring the steady growth of the the breed.

Llamas are also a popular animal in France with the numbers of owners and breeders rising steadily in all Departments.  As people with land, be it overgrown, rough, rocky or wooded, start to realise the environmental benefits of keeping llamas, more and more can be seen as you meander your way round the rural roads.  Llama Trekking in France is also becoming a popular activity where the abundance of national parks, forests and walkways provide idyllic settings for such a unique and thoroughly enjoyable activity.

Being a small family run business, we are able to focus on breeding and rearing quality purebred Clydesdale horses and Llamas.  We limit breeding to between 2 foals and 3 to 6 Llamas per year, which allows us to concentrate on giving each animal the individual attention it warrants and ensure that we can bring out their best qualities.  We also train llamas for llama trekking centres.
